It’s afternoon tea week – does this mean we get to eat afternoon tea every day? We wish!
Afternoon tea dates back to the 19th century from Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. Back then it was the norm to have two meals a day – breakfast early in the morning and dinner late in the evening. So Anna made time for tea and a snack each afternoon which eventually became afternoon tea that we know of today – indulgent and a total treat!
Afternoon tea is a bit more than a “snack” these days – it is ultra-indulgent with dainty finger sandwiches, a selection of scones and patisseries.
Vouch For That enables luxury hotels to sell gift vouchers online – afternoon tea is one of the most popular gifts we sell.
Here are some of our favourite places to have afternoon tea in….
Shendish Manor is located near St Albans and is a stunning Victorian building with modern renovations. It is a very popular wedding venue, has an immaculate golf course and serves a wonderful afternoon tea with everything you would expect. You can even add on a glass of champagne or a cocktail if your afternoon tea marks a special occasion!
Crossbasket Castle is a handy 30 minutes drive from Glasgow, but you will feel like you are in another world. This hotel only opened last May and very quickly achieved a 5 star rating. This will not surprise you when you approach the hotel and visit inside. Afternoon tea here is sublime as it is prepared by a kitchen overseen by Albert and Michel Roux Jr.
Haughton Hall is situated in Shifnal, Shropshire and afternoon tea here is for someone with an extra sweet tooth. As well as freshly made sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and cakes, a chocolate fondue is served with fruit and marshmallows.
The Roxburghe Hotel and Golf Course
The Roxburghe Hotel and Golf Course is situated in the Scottish Borders within a grand estate. The hotel boasts a Chez Roux restaurant overseen by Albert Roux, a beauty suite and a delicious afternoon tea menu. You can even add on a glass of Albert Roux’s Blanc de Blanc Champagne.
Duchally Coutnry Estate
Duchally Country Estate joined VFT earlier this year. This hotel offers the best of both worlds – chic hotel bedrooms and luxurious self-catering lodges in the heart of Perthshire. They offer afternoon tea which you can enjoy in the restaurant or lounging in the Whisky Bar.
